A Gentle Guide for Planning During Life’s Big Transitions
When you’re entering a season of change—especially one as tender and consuming as welcoming a new baby—planning can feel impossible.
I’m about to give birth to our third child in just a few weeks. We homeschool. I have an 18-month-old at my feet most days. And while I’d love to say I’ve got all the systems down, the truth is—this season is stretching me. And it’s teaching me something too:
Planning doesn’t have to mean pressure.
It’s not about sticking to a perfect routine or finishing every item on a checklist. These days, our rhythm is different. Some mornings we rest as a family. Other nights, my husband and I find a quiet pocket of time while the kids sleep to simply connect. The to-do list still exists—but it’s no longer the compass.
We’re learning to plan around energy, not just tasks. To honor the needs of the moment. To thank God for each day we move through together, even if the chores didn’t get done.
Because this is real life. And in real life, grace goes further than grit.
Planning Gently Through a New Baby Season
If you’re entering a new season—pregnancy, postpartum, returning to work, starting homeschool, or just navigating change—here are a few gentle reminders:
- Plan around your rhythm, not the clock.
You don’t need to schedule every hour. Try anchoring your day around rhythms: meals, rest, connection, play. Let those become your guideposts. - Create a weekly flow, not a strict routine.
Assign light themes to each day—like “prep day,” “rest day,” or “family connection”—so your week feels held, but still flexible. - Let rest be part of the plan.
Rest is productive. It allows your body and mind to recover, especially when navigating physical, emotional, or spiritual transitions. - Focus on what matters most today.
Not everything needs to get done. Choose 1–2 priorities that feel right for now, and gently release the rest.
